Bangkok News

Bangkok remains on a high flood alert although the use of sand bags and the removal of some residents seems to have been a very wise move at this stage.

The goverment also announced a resuce package Thailand’s government approved a 2.9 billion baht ( million) special budget to help victims of the nation’s worst flooding in five decades, as authorities in Bangkok worked to strengthen the city’s defenses.

They will also pay 5000 baht per family to those affected most mainly in the rural north east. However their is still ongoing concerns of further flooding and the risk of disease in the poorer regions of thailand.

The Thai red cross has also made donations to the flood victims and are assisting when possible in the hardest hit regions, the process is going to take time as the people of thailand try to build their lives again, many have lost their crops which is the only source of income and food for many of the poorer people in thailand.

The current scenario is not a good one At least 2.8 million people have been affected by the floods, and water has damaged 3.2 million rai (1.3 million acres) of agricultural land, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said today in a statement. Floodwaters have receded in nine provinces, leaving 25 still affected, it said.

Floods have damaged 42 healthcare units, including hospitals, during the past several weeks. Three main hospitals, Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphum and Phimai, have resumed operations.

The Department of Health Service Support has made preliminary estimates of the damage to the three hospitals. The total for Phimai Hospital was put at Bt83 million, Chaiyaphum Hospital at Bt28 million, and Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital and related healthcare units at Bt259 million

So what next for thailand ? A country which seems to have more than its fair share of problems in recent years with the tsunami, sars, the on going saga with former leader Thaksin and this years violent scenes in the capital with major clashes between the Red Shirt supporters and the Thai military,

Hopefully there will be some form of international aid programme which can help in the current flood crisis, however the internal political wrangling and large scale corruption in the kingdom remains a worrying problem.
